Laufey ‘Bewitches’ Her Audience at The Observatory

With the U.S. leg of her The Bewitched Tour coming to a close, fans began lining up for over four hours before doors opened at The Observatory in Santa Ana as they eagerly waited for Grammy-nominated singer Laufey to hit the stage.

The night of November 17 began with an outstanding set from the opener, Adam Melchor, whose powerful vocals and engaging stage presence captivated the audience. Singing songs from his most recent EP FRUITLAND like “Adelaide” and some of his older pieces like “Joyride,” each song was connected to a story that not only resonated with concertgoers but also gave them a laugh as he reflected on some of these moments. With a set basked in cheers and meaningful moments, Melchor truly set the tone for an unforgettable night.

Before you knew it, the venue instantly erupted with cheers as the lights dimmed and Laufey’s band started to walk out. One by one the cheers grew louder and louder until Laufey walked out grabbing one of three guitars before starting her set. As soon as the first few chords of “Fragile” were played, the crowd immediately knew what song she was performing, cheered in excitement, and sang along. 

Throughout her set, Laufey, a masterful musician, effortlessly played a variety of instruments for her fans to enjoy including the guitar, cello, and piano. She also expressed that through her music, she wanted to find ways to blend influences from classic, jazz, and pop music genres and was grateful that her music was loved by fans.

Throughout the night, the Chinese-Icelandic artist shared stories of the songwriting process and meanings behind some of the songs off her latest album like “Second Best” and “Nocturne,” which made fans both laugh and gain a deeper appreciation for the songs. She also expressed how grateful she was for the wide-reaching success of her latest album Bewitched, which earned her a Grammy nomination for “Best Traditional Pop Album.” 

As the venue filled with soothing melodies, one of the most memorable moments of the night was when Laufey turned the crowd into her own choir as they sang along with her, sending goosebumps throughout the crowd. Cheers echoed through the venue, truly showing the love her fans have for her.

As the night came to an end, Laufey once again expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards her fans for not only selling out this show but all the shows on her U.S. and European tour dates as well. To close out her set, she performed one of her most popular songs, “From the Start.” 

As she waved goodbye and interacted with fans, everyone was seemingly smiling ear to ear as they spent their lovely evening with Laufey. The night took an unexpected turn as the crowd, filled with enthusiasm, felt that the night wasn’t over and began chanting “Play Again,” encouraging Laufey to play an encore. Responding to their excitement, Laufey returned to the stage for one final song, treating the audience to a surprise performance of “A Night to Remember.” 

The crowd once more erupted into cheers and tears, giving Laufey somewhat of a hero’s farewell as she took her final bow and left for the last time. And as the lights began to rise, the echoes of cheers continued to fill the air ensuring that this night was truly one to remember.
